About Three Level Genetics

Three Level Genetics is a free genetics education site that presents the same curriculum at three reading depths — so a curious twelve-year-old, a high-school student cramming for exams, and a biology undergraduate can all find their level in the same place.

The person behind it

I'm Lukas, a data analyst from Belgium with a deep enthusiasm for genetics and learning. I built Three Level Genetics because I wanted a resource that doesn't force you to choose between "dumbed down" and "impenetrably technical" — the kind of layered explanation I wished existed when I was trying to understand the field myself.

When I'm not working with data, I'm usually reading about molecular biology, building side projects, or figuring out how to explain something complicated in plain language.

The three-level approach

Every module on this site covers the same concepts at three levels, described here as perspectives rather than ability tiers:

  • Everyday analogies (age 10) — Concrete stories and real-world metaphors. DNA as a recipe book, chromosomes as chapters. No technical vocabulary required.
  • High-school biology (age 15) — Proper terminology, clearly introduced. Named processes, ratios, and the experiments that confirmed them. Exam-ready but not dense.
  • College depth (age 20) — Mechanisms, not just facts. For each named molecule or pathway, the site explains what it acts on, what the molecular event is, and what the consequence is. Caveats and open questions are included.

Switching between levels is instant — the same content, reformatted around your background. Glossary tooltips, gene case studies, and interactive exercises all follow your level choice.

How content is reviewed

Every module goes through a structured fact-check before being published. Claims in the age-20 (college depth) content are individually verified against Wikipedia as a minimum baseline, using a documented review workflow: each claim is checked by a separate reviewer agent, flagged if imprecise or incorrect, and corrected before the module is marked as verified.

This doesn't make the content infallible — genetics moves fast, and some topics involve genuine scientific debate. Where that's the case, the text says so explicitly rather than presenting one view as settled fact.

The Genetics news section is a curated feed of recent genetics headlines. Each item links to the original journal or publisher report and includes an original explanation written at all three reading levels — the same everyday analogies, high-school biology, and college depth as the rest of the site.

Click any headline to expand the full explanation, key facts, and links to related curriculum modules. News items reflect what was reported at the time of publication; preclinical results are labelled as such, and open questions are stated explicitly rather than presented as settled fact.
